Austin is the capital of Texas and the seat of Travis County. Located in Central Texas towards the eastern edge of the American Southwest, the city is the cultural and economic center of the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos metropolitan area. Austin is the fourth most populous city in the state and the 13th most populous city in the entire U.S., with about 820,611 residents.
Austin is located along the Balcones Escarpment and Interstate 35, northwest of Houston. Austin TX real estate covers a total area of 271.8 square miles. Austin is situated on the Colorado River, with three man-made lakes within the city limits. Because the city straddles the Balcones Fault, Austin TX real estate on the east side of the city tends to be flat, with heavy clay soils, while the west side has rolling hills on the edge of Texas Hill Country.

Several Fortune 500 companies have headquarters or regional offices in Austin, including Apple, Google, IBM, Intel, Texas Instruments and 3M. Some of Austin's largest employers are the Austin Independent School District, the City of Austin, the State of Texas, the U.S. Federal Government, St. David's Healthcare Partnership, Seton Family of Hospitals, Texas State University-San Marcos, and the University of Texas at Austin. The region's rapid growth has led Forbes to rank the Austin metropolitan area number one among all big cities for jobs for 2012 in their annual survey.
